One of France's greatest tennis exports and a former World No.7,
Richard Gasquet who has flirted with the idea in recent years will finally end his career in 2025.
The 38-year-old turned pro in 2002 and has spent more than two decades in the top flight of tennis. He has only faded away recently into playing Challenger Tennis likely starting to spell the end for his ambitions.
Now he will retire at
Roland Garros on home soil where he is bound to be guaranteed a wildcard come what may and a grand reception in front of his fans.
“I think that it is the best moment for me to do it,” Gasquet said in the French interview. “It is the best tournament to do it. It’s magnificent, we have the chance being French to be able to stop in these kind of incredible places. An end, it’s always complicated, all the former great players always told me it’s not easy to announce. You never know when, how, where. Here, in any case, it is obvious.”
He has earned over 605 tour level wins in his career and in active players sits behind only Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal ahead of Marin Cilic, Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils.
He has won 16 ATP Tour titles in his career recently triumphing last year in Auckland. He has claimed 36 wins over top 10 opponents and played at the ATP Finals twice in 2007 and 2013.
It is the end of an era too in many ways with Rafael Nadal also announcing his retirement on the same day as the great Frenchman as two of the elder statesman of the game bow out.
