Andrey Rublev and Petra Kvitova are through to the Roland Garros quarterfinals following victories against Fucsovics and Zhang.
Andrey Rublev is the first ATP start to play on Monday at the Roland Garros and while his match against Fucsovics didn't go smoothly he is through to the quarterfinals. The marathon match which lasted almost 4 hours was opened better by the Hungarian. He broke Rublev in the first game before the Russian fought back to tie it. Ultimately it ended in the tiebreak with Marton winning it 7-6(4). The 2nd set was also almost won by Marton who broke Rublev early to take the lead which ballooned to 5-2. That's when Rublev stringed together a 5-game run to win the set 7-5.
That was the breaking point in the match as Rublev went from defeatist to victory in his mind. Even when Fucsovics took the lead once more 3-1 Rublev never stopped believing and similar to the previous set he came back to win it 6-4. None of that broke Marton in spirit as he still continued playing well forcing another tiebreak in the 4th set but in it, he completely combusted which allowed Rublev to clinch the victory in a tough match which saw him almost defeated a couple of times.
Petra Kvitova didn't have issues like that against Zhang as she won her match 6-2 6-4. Zhan struggled throughout the match and even called multiple medical timeouts throughout the match. The first one came early indicating existing problems even before she stepped onto the match. All of that severely limited her play and Kvitova cruised to an easy victory without even trying too hard.
