Andrey Rublev and
Denis Shapovalov played in different countries and on different courts but both won their grass season openers.
Andrey Rublev and Denis Shapovalov are two players that have had less than ideal clay season's and they both had great starts on the grass courts. Andrey Rublev took on compatriot and doubles partner
Karen Khachanov and he proved better. The match was a close one that featured great rallies but Rublev was able to assert himself with his forehand.
It's the biggest weapon either player possesses and it proved vital in today' match. Rublev took the first set 6-3 but the 2nd featured a tight battle that was settled in the tiebreak. Not many points decided it was Rublev won 6-3 7-6(5).
In another country, and another court Denis Shapovalov made a winning start in his grass-court season opener. He took on Vukic from Australia and it was a very tight match in the manner of old-school grass-court matches. Both sets were very close as both players served rather well.
Both are on the taller side as well which allowed them to punish any shorter ball. In the end, it was Shapovalov who proved better in both tiebreaks but the 2nd one could have gone and probably should have gone to the Australian. He was up 5-3 and had 3 total set point but lost 8-6.
