Next week sees the
Stockholm Open take place, but unfortunately
Matteo Berrettini will not make his return at the start of the European Clay Court swing.
Entering the main draw and with videos posted as of late, Berrettini looked all set for his return. But now he has withdrawn, it seems likely that he wasn't 100%.
After a heroic return to form at Wimbledon, all was going well until disaster hit for Berrettini at the US Open. He was trailing Arthur Rinderknech and retired with an ankle injury as more bad luck went his way.
He has not played since, but there is cause for optimism that he felt well enough to enter and it seems he is getting closer.
"Certainly not the way I hoped my US Open would end," the 2019 US Open semifinalist wrote in an Instagram post after his unfortunate Flushing Meadows ending. "I have been working closely with medical experts since I left the court. We are now waiting for scan results to determine the best next steps."
