The
Miami Open's day of rain has led to a scheduling nightmare for the tournament with only eight games completed on Friday meaning that there is a staggering 45 matches slated on Saturday in Florida.
The
schedule has now been confirmed with our preview looking ahead to the main talking points and matches to follow, but that is if any take place with the weather again looking poor. Often called the Sunshine Double, as others have quipped it is soon turning into the Disaster Double in terms of weather.
45 singles matches in one day with many top players on outside courts
While not as bad as Friday, the weather is still likely to make play stop start on Saturday. On Stadium, the day session is supposed to feature Taylor Fritz, Naomi Osaka facing Elina Svitolina and
Iga Swiatek taking on Camila Giorgi so essentially the end of the day session from Friday. As well as
Jannik Sinner completing his match against Andrea Vavassori to also fit in.
In the evening,
Carlos Alcaraz and
Aryna Sabalenka are slated to play with likely scope for matches to be moved from Grandstand with Jessica Pegula, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and
Elena Rybakina all slated to play from the 11am start time on the court.
Onto the outside courts with Andy Murray, Ons Jabeur, Leylah Fernandez and Ben Shelton playing on the third biggest court. Some top ties including Qinwen Zheng v Victoria Azarenka, Anna Kalinskaya v Jelena Ostapenko highlight some of the main outer court action with many top names having to play away from the glare of the cameras in order to get the rounds done. In all there is 26 and 11 ATP and WTA second round matches and eight WTA third round matches slated to take place on Saturday. Only a small section of the ATP draw has been confirmed to have matches on Sunday such is the likelihood of rain delays again and could lead to a knock on effect of later in the tournament with players having to play twice in a day.
It shines a spotlight again on the lack of a roof at these tournaments and how rain as a result can wreak havoc especially in a city that had flood warnings during most of Friday. Whether the 45 matches get close to being finished is anyone's guess, but it will likely be stop start even if they do.
