Diego Schwartzman almost did not win against Thiem at Rolland Garros and he admitted as much after the matching saying he didn't think it was his day.
Diego Schwartzman sent the tennis world into a craze by defeating
Dominic Thiem in the
Roland Garros quarterfinal. It was deserved victory which came after a long 5-hour battle but it almost did not happen. Schwartzman was up 1-0, then down 2-1 and he missed a lot of opportunities to allow Thiem to come back into the match. Of that he said:
“In the second set [and] the third set, I had a lot of opportunities, also easy opportunities. That's why I was really upset, really angry with myself at that time… when I was close to winning in those sets. I couldn't do it."
And indeed the frustration was visible which makes the whole victory even more sensational for the Argentinian. There was real doubt in his mind in the match, as she put it after the match:
“It was a tough situation because in the fourth [set], he started playing so well. I made the comeback, serving at 5-4, 40/0. He played three unreal points, amazing points, because he's one of the best and he can do it. At that time I was thinking, ‘Okay, c'mon, today it's not going to happen."
But the Argentinian rallied to fight back against Thiem turning around a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory. Of the turnaround he said:
“I had a lot of opportunities — easy, tough ones, hard [ones]. Every single opportunity was different. I didn't take them… I played an amazing tie-break in the fourth. In the fifth, I keep doing the same thing, being solid. At the end, I think [I] physically finished better than him.”
He did look quite fresh in the final set but a 5-hour battle leaves traces and it will be key for him to recuperate as best as he can. His next opponent is Rafael Nadal whom he beat in a marathon match at Rome not long ago.
