Kei Nishikori played his best match in years to upset
Andrey Rublev at the Tokyo
Olympic Games. 6-3 6-4.
It was a fabulous match between two players who were playing very good tennis all match long. Rublev was playing at his first Olympics but the Russian was very good. At times he was able to produce brilliant but he faced an immovable force named Kei Nishikori. The Japanese player put forward an inspiring effort to win in two sets.
Rublev had no answer for Nishikori who was blasting away very precise shots from the baseline. The Russian prefers to be the aggressor and rarely plays well when pushed on the defensive and Nishikori was able to use that to his advantage. The Bronze medalist from Rio won the opening set 6-3.
He was sensational in crucial rallies saving 4 of 5 break points while converting both break chances he had. Rublev was able to find some solutions in the 2nd set and he was able to keep Nishikori at bay. However, as the set progressed Nishikori was able to create some chances.
Rublev wiggled his way out of a 15-40 situation at 2-2 but at 3-3, he wasn't able to do it again. Nishikori took the break and served out the match to win it 6-3 6-4. A majestic performance to keep the dream of another medal alive.
