The
Shanghai Masters semifinals will be played on Saturday, October 11, with the
possibility of seeing
Jannik Sinner and
Novak Djokovic face each other once
again in a final. Both arrive as favourites in their respective matches against
Taylor Fritz and
Tomas Machac.
However,
their opponents cannot be overlooked. The American has delivered strong
performances in recent months, while the Czech comes off an impressive
straight-sets win over
Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner set
for semifinal clash against surprise challenger Machac
The
anticipated quarterfinal battle between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev
turned out to be a straightforward victory for the Italian, who brushed aside
the Russian 6-1, 6-4. With wins against Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Ben Shelton
along the way, Sinner stands as the clear favorite to reach the final.
The world
No. 1 is on a blistering streak, having won 20 of his last 21 matches, with his
only loss coming against Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing last week. Sinner now holds
an impressive 63-6 record for the season, with three of his losses coming at
the hands of Alcaraz.
The highly
anticipated semifinal matchup with the Spaniard didn’t materialize after Tomas
Machac shocked the world by defeating Alcaraz 7-6, 7-5, making it to his first
Masters 1000 semifinal.
The 30th
seed earned high praise from Alcaraz, who said Machac played at a top-5 level.
The question now is whether Machac can sustain this form against Sinner. The
Italian has won their only previous encounter at the Miami Open earlier this
year, 6-4, 6-2. With nothing to lose, Machac has already guaranteed a spot in
the top-25 for the first time and has shown he can compete with the best.
Sinner seeks his 8th final of the season and 22nd of his career
Djokovic faces
familiar foe Fritz
The 24-time
Grand Slam champion is back on tour following an early US Open exit and has
continued his dominance in Shanghai, where he boasts a remarkable 44-8 record
and four titles. Djokovic has worked his way back into the top 7 for the ATP
Finals qualification and looks likely to make his 17th appearance at the
season-ending event.
This week,
Djokovic showed his class with straight-set wins over Alex Michelsen, Flavio
Coboli (28th seed), and Roman Safiulin. In the quarterfinals, Czech youngster
Jakub Mensik pushed him to the limit by taking the first set, but Djokovic
mounted a comeback to win 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.
In the
semifinals, Djokovic will face Taylor Fritz, his first top-10 opponent since
the Wimbledon final three months ago. While Fritz has been in great form, the
American has never beaten Djokovic, with the Serbian leading their head-to-head
9-0 (21-2 in sets).
However,
Fritz has made strides this year, reaching his first Grand Slam final at the US
Open, where he lost to Sinner, and he hasn't dropped a set in Shanghai. His
emphatic 6-1, 6-2 win over Holger Rune in the round of 16 and a solid 6-3, 6-4
victory against David Goffin in the quarterfinals show that Fritz is in top
form. If there's ever a time for Fritz to break his losing streak against
Djokovic, this might be it.
