The ‘Six Kings Slam’ is in jeopardy due to Daniil Medvedev's possible withdrawal after suffering a shoulder injury at the Shanghai Masters. The Russian reached the quarter-finals of the tournament but fell dramatically to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, losing 1-6, 4-6.
The tournament, to be held in Saudi Arabia from Wednesday, October 16 to Saturday, October 19, has generated high expectations by gathering the top stars of the Tour. The official line-up had been confirmed months ago, featuring Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Holger Rune, and Medvedev.

Medvedev's Future at Six Kings Slam Uncertain

With over $6 million in prize money on offer, it is also a lucrative opportunity for the players. However, the world No. 5 has cast doubt on his participation in the exhibition tournament after experiencing physical discomfort while facing Sinner in Shanghai. “I, unfortunately, had pain in my shoulder, which I didn't think I would have,” Medvedev said.
“It started yesterday during the match, but I thought it was nothing, and I still hope it's nothing serious; I'll have to do the checks tomorrow,” the former world No. 1 added. “But it didn't let me serve the way I wanted, and with Jannik, serving is important because he's a great server now; it's tough to break him, so you need to serve well, and without the serve, it's tough.
“Then when you have pain, the energy's not the same. So, in the second set, I tried to pump my energy up, and it did help me a bit, but still, without the serve, it's tough to beat Jannik, and that's what happened.”
Physical issues come at a bad time amid a busy schedule for Medvedev this month. In addition to the exhibition at the Six Kings Slam, he has the ATP 500 Vienna Open and the Paris Masters ahead. “I have three tournaments where I'm signed up; let's see if I play them, especially with the problems with my shoulder; these problems started yesterday,” the former US Open champion explained.
Medvedev is also 4th in the Race, so his qualification for the ATP Finals is highly probable just a few weeks before the end of the season, which would mean another mandatory tournament where he defends his semifinal spot, where he lost precisely to Sinner.
