Ben Shelton sought revenge against Tommy Paul and secured a commanding victory with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Tommy Paul was one of the players who arrived in good form for the hard court swing of the US Open Series, notably reaching the semifinals of the Canadian Open recently, where he fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Jannik Sinner and defeated Carlos Alcaraz along the way.
In Flushing Meadows, he convincingly defeated the 21st seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a score of 6-1, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
Facing the young star Shelton, who hadn't won back-to-back matches since the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, where he was defeated by Paul in a closely contested match by 7-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Shelton displayed impeccable form in the early rounds, eliminating Pedro Cachín, Dominic Thiem (who retired in the second set), and Aslan Karatsev.
With both players possessing strong serves, it was Shelton who faced more challenges initially, suffering a break and falling behind 3-0. He had to save four break points to prevent Paul from extending his lead. World No. 47 made a remarkable comeback, securing five of the next six games to take the first set 6-4.
Shelton had doubts about his serve, committing five double faults and conceding eight break points to his opponent, although he successfully defended seven of them.
Paul, on the other hand, only gave up two break points, but both were capitalized upon by his opponent.
The beginning of the second set saw both players holding their serves until 3-3, and Paul appeared more secure in his service and defense. However, Shelton managed to break in the seventh game, and after holding his serve, he secured another break to take the set 6-3.
In the third set, everything seemed to be going Shelton's way as he obtained a break and led 4-1. However, Paul staged a comeback and won five consecutive games to claim the set 6-4 and extend the match.
A fiercely contested fourth set saw both players defending their serves, but Paul couldn't handle the pressure when he was down 5-4 and serving, handing the match to Shelton on his first match point.
In the quarterfinals, Shelton will face the winner between world No. 10 Frances Tiafoe and Rinky Hijikata, who will play on the same Sunday in Louis Armstrong Stadium.
