Ben Shelton advanced to the third round after Dominic Thiem's withdrawal at the US Open.

The North American eliminated Dominic Thiem from the US Open after the Austrian player sustained an injury during the match.

Shelton entered the match against Thiem with a positive mindset, having secured a solid victory over the Argentine Pedro Cachín in the first round with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. On the other hand, Thiem had also displayed dominance in the first round, defeating the 25th seed Aleksander Bublik in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, showcasing a high level of play.

The first set was closely contested. With some level of equality in the early games, it was Thiem who managed to secure the first break in the sixth game, taking a 4-2 lead with the advantage of serving. Shelton responded immediately in the following game and managed to recover the break.

With the score at 5-4 in favor of the American, Thiem had a set point in his favor but couldn't capitalize on it. The set extended to a tie-break, where the 20-year-old emerged victorious with a score of 7-6(1), giving him the lead in the match.

Unfortunately, Thiem suffered an injury right at the start of the second set. In the first game, the Austrian stopped moving during Shelton's serve, clearly indicating his physical discomfort. Ranked 81st in the world, Thiem sat on the bench and requested the physiotherapist's assistance.

However, he ultimately decided to retire from the match, as he was not in a condition to continue, concluding his participation with a score of 7-6(1), 1-0, retired.

In the second round, Shelton will face Russian player Aslan Karatsev, who caused an upset in the first round by eliminating the 4th seed Holger Rune and maintained his confidence to proceed by defeating Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round.
