Andy
Roddick delivered his verdict on
Jannik Sinner's victory over
Novak Djokovic in
the ATP Finals.
The Italian
tennis player is having the best season of his career, and so far in the
Finals, he has showcased a spectacular level with wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas
(6-4, 6-4) and Novak Djokovic (7-5, 6-7(5), 7-6(2)).
The battle
with 'Nole' exceeded three hours, and Sinner's victory ended Djokovic's streak
of 19 consecutive wins, marking his first win against the Serbian in four
encounters. Sinner's outstanding performance did not go unnoticed, and former
world No. 1
Andy Roddick shared his opinion on the Italian's great moment.
"Listen
when the book's being written on Sinner, he's going to look back on this &
say, 'Hey that might have been the best match I ever played or that was the
start of many matches like this where I go on to become a Grand Slam winner’…
But it's just an unbelievable effort from Jannik Sinner start to finish,”
former world No. 1 stated
“As Jim
Courier mentioned, Novak played well today. He doesn't often play that well
& find the wrong side of it. Sinner was winning points right, taking cuts
off returns. He took the racquet out of Djokovic's hand a lot tonight, serving
well, moving well, switching directions. I couldn't be more impressed with the
match that we just saw,” Andy Roddick added.
Despite
having two victories, Sinner's advancement to the tournament's semifinals is
not yet confirmed. In his upcoming match against Holger Rune, if Sinner loses
and Rune also secures two victories, the situation will become complex. This
scenario could unfold if Djokovic defeats Hubert Hurkacz, who replaced
Tsitsipas.
In the
event of a three-way tie with two victories each, the sets won and eventually
the games won will be considered. While mathematically Sinner could still be
eliminated, only a disaster against Rune would impact his journey to the
semifinals. The Italian needs to win at least one set to secure the top spot in
his group.
