The Canadians defeated Italy to win their first Billie Jean King Cup title in the competition's 60-year history. Event debutant Marina Stakusic stunned World No.43 Martina Trevisan in the first match, before Fernandez sealed the deal with a win over Jasmine Paolini.
Trudeau congratulates team on historic victory
Following the huge win, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to social media to offer a token of appreciation for the women that represented his country at the event. In a tweet, the 51-year-old congratulated the Canadian team for lifting their first-ever BJK Cup.
"One for the history books. Congratulations, Team Canada, on winning our country’s first-ever @BillieJeanKingCup title! We’ll be replaying – and reliving – this moment for quite some time," wrote Trudeau.
