Italy’s
Jannik Sinner has now joined an elite list of
players in the race for an incredible feat. The 23-year-old is regarded as the
best player currently playing in the world in men’s tennis in the singles
category, is currently taking part in the
Rome Open where he cemented his spot in
the final after beating America’s Tommy Paul in the last-four clash with a
score of 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.
With that win, Sinner has now extended his unbeaten streak
to 26 matches. His streak started after the China Open defeat to Spain’s Carlos
Alcaraz. As things stand, Sinner’s streak is the seven-longest by a player in
men’s tennis since the start of 1990.
Longest winning streaks in men's tennis since 1990
1. Novak Djokovic (43, 29, 28, 28)
2. Roger Federer (41, 35)
3. Thomas Muster (35)
4. Rafael Nadal (32)
5. Pete Sampras (29)
6. Andy Murray (28)
Those numbers suggest how incredible Sinner has been on the court in the recent past, and he will be hoping to continue it when he takes the court on Sunday. In his way will be the player who was also the last player to
get the better of him in a tennis match, Alcaraz.
The young Spaniard cemented
his spot in the final after beating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the last-four
clash in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. This will be the 12th meeting
between the two players. In the previous 11 meetings, the young Spaniard had an
edge, coming out on top on seven occasions. Three of those victories came in
the last three matches, all of which were played last year.
Talking ahead of the match, the reigning world number one stated
that he is well aware of his opponent. "We know each other quite well
now," he said, as quoted on the
ATP’s official website. "It's always
special to share the court with him. I feel like we both know how to play
against each other a little bit, so we have to be prepared tactically. Of
course, small things are going to be changed. But it's just a great test for me
to see where I am.”
