Nick
Kyrgios responded to Tracy Austin's comments about his future in tennis.
During the
Ultimate Tennis Showdown exhibition tournament in Los Angeles, where Kyrgios
was present to coach Frances Tiafoe due to an injury that kept him out of
competition, the Australian openly expressed his opinion about his upcoming
years on the ATP tour
“The
sport’s crazy. The schedule is out of control. No f**king chance [I play till I
am 33], there’s no way,” Kyrgios said.
“There's no
chance. I'm playing till 33? Insane. I'm not playing till 33. I promise you
when I'm gone, you'll never see me again,” he added.
Former
world No. 1, Tracy Austin, gave her opinion on the comments made by the former
Wimbledon finalist, stating that she finds the situation to be sad.
“I kind of
find it sad you're playing a professional sport and you just don't absolutely
love it. You don't drink it up. You want to feel like you're lucky to be out
there.”
Former Wimbledon
finalist quickly responded to Tracy Austin's comments through Twitter,
defending his stance and clarifying his focus:
“Why am I
lucky to be out there? I worked and I put myself in that position, there wasn’t
any luck involved. Some people play for different things, we aren’t all tennis
nuts, some of us have a little more of an impact than that.”
Nick
Kyrgios, considered by many as one of the most talented players on the ATP
Tour, has experienced certain ups and downs in his career. Until his
participation in the All England Club in 2022, he had only reached two Grand
Slam quarterfinals.
Although he
managed to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open last year, this year he has
faced a series of injury problems that have kept him away from the Grand Slams.
Bad luck
has been a hurdle for Kyrgios in 2023, as he had to miss the Australian Open
due to a knee injury and later withdrew from the French Open due to a foot
injury caused by a car break-in. Additionally, he suffered a wrist injury that
led him to withdraw from Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament.
