Stan Wawrinka takes down Holger Rune in Indian Wells

He had match points the last time he faced him but couldn't get it done however this time Wawrinka did get it done as he took down Rune 6-2 6-7(5) 7-5.

It wasn't a very good match from Rune as the Danish was all over the place in the first set missing quite a few balls. He was complaining about the crowd as well and doing what he does most of the time when things go south. Wawrinka on the other hand remained calm and played his game putting up 4 aces and 9 winners in that 6-2 set.

Rune matched him in the winner department but he had 13 unforced errors, 12 more than what Wawrinka had (1). The second set saw Rune play much better than in the first set and it was a far more competitive match. He had several chances to go up as well but after taking a medical timeout for a shoulder issue, Rune lost his rhythm and surrendered his serve.

Wawrinka served for the match at 5-3 but rushed a bit and two forehand misses gave Rune a chance. The Danish player extended the match into the tiebreak. It was a well-fought tiebreak with Wawrinka being better for the early part of it. He took a 5-2 lead but then lost five straight points to drop it 5-7.

The final set saw a close battle between the players once more with neither being able to pull ahead early. The first one to do so was Wawrinka very late in the set taking a 6-5 which he converted to a 7-5 final set win. A good effort from Wawrinka albeit not perfect after completely throwing away that second set.
