Stefanos
Tsitsipas pledged to make a significant donation to Acapulco after the Mexican
Open amid a delicate situation in the country. Mexicans suffered a few months
ago from devastation caused by Hurricane Otis, which left 52 dead and damages
estimated at over 22 million dollars.
For this
reason, it was a challenge for the organization to ensure the ATP 500 takes
place, involving an investment of more than 12 million dollars and the support
of 35 companies. The tournament is held from February 26 to March 2, 2024, and
boasts a star-studded main draw with eight players within the top 15, including
one of the local favorites, Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 11).
The 2021
tournament runner-up expressed his excitement upon arriving in Acapulco during
a challenging time: “Very good to be back, happy that the tournament is still
going strong, it is something we did not expect after the tragedy of a few
months ago,” the 2-times Grand Slam finalist said.
“It gives
me happiness that so many people came together and made this possible to return
everything to this beautiful city of Acapulco. I am here with my tennis to give
the best I can to the communities,” Stefanos Tsitispas added.
The Greek
made a significant announcement for the Mexican community by pledging to donate
for every ace he hits during this tournament week: 'I'll be donating $1,000 for
every ace I hit this week in Acapulco, and it's going to be transferred to the
relief program for Acapulco in 2024,” the former world No. 3 stated.
In his last
appearance in Acapulco, the Greek was eliminated in the semifinals against
Cameron Norrie and totaled 21 aces in four matches. In 2021, he was the
runner-up behind Alexander Zverev and also achieved 21 aces, although on that
occasion in five matches.
