Maria Sakkari and
Veronika Kudermetova will battle it out for the final spot at the
WTA Finals with a quarter-final clash in Guadalajara.
Both players had good seasons and a very tough draw here but they managed to make their way to the quarter-final. The stakes are high as the winner will secure a spot in the WTA Finals while the losing player will walk away pretty much empty.
On the matchup, Sakkari said:
“It was meant to be. We both had very tough draws. It was not guaranteed that we were going to play each other in the quarter-finals. I think the passion, how much we want it, it got us to the point that we have to play each other just to get that one spot. It’s going to come down to not who wants it more, but who plays a better match tomorrow.”
Their most recent clash came this year at the Australian Open in January when Sakkari won. She leads the H2H 2-1 and would like to secure her second appearance at the event. Sakkari played in the singles last year while Kudermetova also played at the WTA Finals albeit in doubles.
