Casper Ruud took down qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves at the 2024
French Open with an unintentional storyline added to it as was confirmed post match involving his father Christian Ruud.
Ruud got redemption of sort during his 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win for his father who lost to the uncle of Meligeni Alves during the 1995 Swedish Open final in Bastad. Informed about it, Ruud said that it was very much already on the mind of him and his team and that they even discussed it over breakfast.
The Norwegian who is one of the favourites for the title over the next two weeks said that the win was especially satisfying for his father. But is revenge that they both were after with Casper being the one to carry it out.
This though is due to the fact that it was Christian Ruud's best chance to become an ATP champion so is a sour note. His son has fared a lot better. He has won titles at the Barcelona Open and Geneva Open this season as well as making it to the final of the Los Cabos Open, Mexican Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters.
“Yeah, we talked about it for breakfast actually, because my father lost both that final one time in his career, so he was never able to win the ATP tournament. But yeah, the guy he lost the final to was Felipe's uncle," Ruud said.
."So I think both me and my dad wanted to get some revenge on the Meligeni family, and yeah, it was worth the wait, I guess. It was many years that we had to wait, but we got it today," he added.
Ruud now goes up against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who came from a set down to defeat Valentin Vacherot 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. It is a 2-2 Head to Head between the pair stretching back to the 2019 Next Gen Finals. ADF also won at the 2021 French Open albeit Ruud in the intervening years has turned the tables and also reached back-to-back French Open finals.
