America’s
Taylor Fritz achieved a unique milestone as he entered
the 100th week in the top-10 of the
ATP rankings. The 27-year-old is
regarded as one of the best American players currently playing in men’s tennis
in the singles category.
Fritz has now entered his 100th week in the Top-10
of the ATP rankings. The San Diego-born is currently ranked fourth in the world.
He has now become the highest-ranked American player since the former world
number one Andy Roddick became the world number four in 2007. Out of his 100
weeks in the top-10, he spent most weeks in the number nine spot. He stayed there
for 32 weeks.
He has now been the world number four for 21 weeks. This is his
career-best ranking. Fritz, who has withdrawn from the ongoing
Monte-Carlo Masters, was recently featured in the Miami Open, where his journey ended in the semifinals stage after losing to the Czech Republic’s youngster, Jakub Mensik, with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. Talking after the match, Fritz
admitted his frustration for not being able to break the serve of the 19-year-old.
He also predicted that Mensik would have a real shot at the title against Novak
Djokovic, something which turned out to be true as well.
"Between the two tie-breaks, I have to win one of them.
I have to play a little bit better," said Fritz after the match. "I
think when I'm playing well, when I'm winning matches, it's kind of just what I
do. I pull through these situations. So to just kind of get out-toughed in two
tie-breaks, it sucks. I did my job. I didn't get broken. I didn't face a break
point until the third set, so... it sucks. If the conditions are fast enough
and he's serving well enough, he's always going to be in the match. It's going
to be tight. He's going to have a solid chance. I'm not sure because I couldn't
return a serve, that doesn't mean that Novak is not going to be able to return
a serve. It's going to depend on that."
