Taylor Fritz had to endure a very tricky first-set tiebreak in order to secure it but when he did, the American largely cruised to finish off in two sets 7-6(11) 6-4.
It was a great match between Friz and O'Connell, especially in the first set. Both of them dominated on their serves which isn't surprising but the level of the Australian certainly was. Yes, he's been playing rather well this year but he was on something else in the first set with 8 aces and 16 winners. Unfortunately, the unforced errors (13) really cost him in the tiebreak.
Fritz was up 4-1 but then throw it all away allowing his opponent to make it 6-6. O'Connell even had a set point before the American finally finished things off 13-11. Before that we saw both players save one break point a piece which shows how dominant they were on serve. The second set was much simpler for Fritz.
He took an early break as his opponent couldn't hold the high level. O'Connell didn't serve as well as he did in the first set nor was he as precise from the baseline. The American was able to hold the break comfortably and finished off the match. A good win for Fritz especially after the first set which could have gone either way.
