Taylor
Fritz played a great match to defeat Aleksander Vukic 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4 and won
the title at the
Atlanta Open.
The
American advanced to his eleventh ATP final after defeating his compatriot
Jeffrey John Wolf in the semifinals. Throughout the tournament, Fritz didn't
drop a set and secured impressive victories against Wu Yibing, Kei Nishikori,
and Wolf.
On the
other side, Vukic had the best week of his career, reaching his first ATP
final. He defeated three seeded players along the way, starting in the first
round against 19-year-old Ethan Quinn, and then defeating Yoshito Nishioka (4th
seed), Cristopher Eubanks (5th seed), and Ugo Humbert (7th seed).
This
encounter marked the first meeting between Fritz and Vukic. Both players began
the match with some uncertainty in their respective service games, but they
quickly found their rhythm and kept the match close until 6-5 in favor of the
American.
Fritz
served a love game to take the lead, and although it seemed like a tie-break
was inevitable, Vukic showed nerves towards the end, losing his service game,
much to the support of the local crowd.
Fueled by
the confidence from winning the first set, Fritz continued his dominant serving
performance, winning 14 consecutive service points until 4-3 in the second set.
While Vukic was slightly less effective on his serve, he managed to save a
break point in the second game to keep the match level.
In the 12th
game of the second set, Vukic saved two match points and finally forced a
tie-break, where he was more precise and leveled the score with a 7-6(5) win.
In the
third set, Fritz didn't waver and maintained his composure during his service
games, putting pressure on his opponent. In the seventh game, he secured the
crucial break that proved to be insurmountable for Vukic, clinching the sixth
ATP title of his career and retaining his position as world No. 9.
This positive
outcome will undoubtedly boost Fritz's confidence for the upcoming weeks, where
he is scheduled to play in the ATP 500 DC Open and the Masters 1000 events, the
Canadian Open, and Cincinnati Open, all in consecutive weeks.
Despite the
defeat, Vukic can take away positive experiences from the tournament. In
addition to reaching his first ATP 250 final, the 27-year-old Australian is set
to achieve the best ranking of his career, reaching world No. 62.
