Novak Djokovic is officially not yet vaccinated and with confusion surrounding the
Australian Open, there is a chance the Serbian might miss the event.
It's been a tough couple of weeks for Novak Djokovic who is still waiting on any kind of clarity coming from the land Down Under. Recent reports suggest that Djokovic will be allowed to enter the country even if not vaccinated with a mandatory quarantine in place. Expectedly, Djokovic is not a fan of that but the Serbian is widely expected to comply with any rules that would allow him to still play at the event.
His former coach
Boris Becker was asked about the Djokovic vaccine row and the German said:
“I can understand it at first [Djokovic’s reluctance]. That is his right, that is privacy, that has to be protected. But
if he wants to work as a tennis player, then, unfortunately, they are
rules and for all tennis players who want to go to Australia."
There is a lot of confusion coming from Australia right now with different sources reporting different things. Expanding on that Becker said:
“The state of Victoria requires proof of vaccination. It is completely unimportant what we mean. If the Australian government has decided that way, there is only one solution.”
It remains to be seen whether Becker is right and whether something changes in the next few weeks. If government officials in Australia don't budge then it will come down to Djokovic to either get vaccinated or miss the event.
