Lorenzo Musetti joined Carlos Alcaraz with a new haircut at the 2023 Canadian Open.
The Italian player kicked off his participation at the National Bank Open on Monday, easily winning his match against Japan's Yoshito Nishioka with a score of 6-4, 6-1 in just one hour and fifteen minutes.
Despite having a strong year that has positioned him as the world No. 19 and the 16th seed in Toronto, Musetti had only played three matches on hardcourts this year, all of which resulted in losses.
Some of his notable achievements include reaching the semifinals in Barcelona and Bastad, as well as the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo, and making it to the fourth round in the Rome Open and Wimbledon.
Musetti appeared with a fresh new look at the Canadian tournament, sporting a new haircut, and he explained the reason behind it in an interview with Tennis Channel.
“You know, it’s been quite a long time that I didn’t make the decision to cut short the hair,” Musetti said.
“But Italy was so hot and I couldn’t move with the ponytail because I had really messy hair and I didn’t like it,” he added.
“So I finally decided with my girlfriend that she approved. The joint decision, even with my family. But I mean, I think I look a little bit younger. With the longer hair, I was a little bit older. I mean, the look,”
The world No. 19 achieved his 20th victory in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, with the first one coming in Canada. This accomplishment comes in the midst of a year without successes on hardcourts, attributed to his early exits in the Australian Open, Miami Open, and Indian Wells.
His upcoming challenge is set against the Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis on Wednesday, August 9. Kokkinakis advanced through the qualifiers and secured a victory in the first round against China's Zhang Zhizhen. This match will mark the first-ever encounter between Musetti and Kokkinakis, who is currently ranked as the world No. 79.
