Roger Federer’s ex-coach Severin Luthi believes that Switzerland’s
Stan Wawrinka should never be written off.
The 38-year-old is slowly moving towards the end of his career
and has not won a major tournament in a long time.
Luthi, who coached the 20-time Grand Slam winner, was quoted
in a report where he compared Wawrinka to a diesel engine.
"Even during the time when Roger was still playing, I
was asked again and again whether I was surprised by his successes,” he said “Now
it's exactly the same with Stan: I'm prepared for the surprise because I know
how much work he puts into it.
"Stan lives for this sport, he is always energized, shows
incredible passion. It is fascinating. If he stays healthy, I definitely
believe he can win another title. Wherever. Can he win another Grand Slam
tournament? That looks difficult.
But here, too, I say: Stan should never be written off. He's
proven time and time again what he's capable of. That's always an issue for us
in the Davis Cup team. Stan is just like a diesel engine. The longer he runs,
the better he gets. I hope the best for him – and that he can keep doing it for
as long as possible.”
Wawrinka has won three Grand Slam titles in his career. The
only Grand Slam where he is yet to lift the title is Wimbledon where his best
outing to date is playing in the quarterfinal stage.
The Lausanne-born first major title was winning the
Australian Open in 2014 where he defeated Spain’s former world number Rafael
Nadal in the final with a score of 6–3, 6–2, 3–6, 6–3.
Wawrinka then went on to win the French Open in 2015 and the
US Open in 2016 and on both occasions, he ended up defeating Serbia’s Novak
Djokovic in the final.
