Jannik
Sinner wasn’t satisfied with his performance despite his victory over Nicolas
Jarry in the first round of the ATP 500
China Open. The 2-time Grand Slam
champion mentioned that he needs to improve his second serve, especially
against aggressive returners.
Although
the Chilean has been on a negative streak since reaching the Rome Open final,
he managed to challenge the world No. 1 and take the first set. Sinner advanced
to the second round and awaits his opponent, either 3-time Grand Slam champion
Stan Wawrinka or Russian
Roman Safiullin.
Sinner overcomes early struggles
Sinner
enters his title defense in Beijing while comfortably retaining the world No. 1
ranking. With only a handful of tournaments left in the season, it seems likely
that Sinner will finish the year at the top, holding nearly a 3,000-point lead
in the Race over his closest rival, Alexander Zverev.
After his
win against Jarry, the 23-year-old credited the South American for his strong
returns. Sinner has won 23 of his last 25 matches, and after defeating Jarry,
he has now secured 12 consecutive victories, with titles at the Cincinnati Open
and the US Open.
“The second
serve I still have to improve a little bit,” he said after defeating Jarry 4-6,
6-3, 6-1. “He was returning very aggressively, it's not easy. After the
US Open, we worked very hard on the serve. I’m happy with my progress, but
obviously, there is still a lot of room for improvement.”
“He played some very good tennis in the first set. He was
serving very well, and I struggled to return his serve,” he added. “I just
tried to stay focused mentally. The first round of a competition is always
tough, and playing against him is very challenging. But I’m happy with my
performance and how I finished the match.”
It was a special match for Sinner, as it was his first since
the passing of his aunt Margith Rachegger, to whom he dedicated his US Open
title a few weeks ago. Today, after the match, Sinner had a quiet reaction and
blew a kiss to the sky in honor of his late aunt.
