Jannik Sinner was in a destructive mood as he saw off Novak Djokovic without facing a break point as again the Italian ace proved to be the bogeyman for the Serbian kingpin in a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 win at the 2024 Australian Open.
Sinner will now face Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev in the final of the 2024 Australian Open. A first ever Grand Slam final for the Italian who keeps raising his bar to new heights and up until losing the third set against Djokovic had not dropped a set all tournament. Asked by Jim Courier post match about being in a first Grand Slam final, he was left stumped to give an answer especially given that he hadn't played any warm-up tournaments all pre-season so didn't know that it would go the way it did.
“I don’t know what to say really. I started off with a couple exhibition matches, trying to come here as prepared as possible. The confidence from end of last year has for sure kept the belief that I can play with the best players in the world. I’m really happy I can play Sunday my first final. Let’s see how it goes. But I’m really happy. I come here with a smile. I’ll try my best," said Sinner.
He was also asked if his family was at home and had a hilarious response. Asked by Courier if they were here or back in Italy, he doesn't want any bad luck.
"They’re home and they will stay home," said Sinner. He was asked to give them a message and he said: "It’s 8:15 in Europe. So good morning guys."
He also gave his perspective on the potential final opponent prior to that in Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev. “I will watch it for sure. As I said, I’m a huge tennis fan. It’s good for me to watch it. I’m a bit more relaxed now. They’re such incredible players. They’ve met already so many times. It’s gonna be interesting. Sascha is back to playing 100%. He’s playing great. And also Daniil. Hopefully it’s gonna be a great match. We’ll see what’s coming on Sunday.”
