As the Wednesday was a rainy day in Berlin, players waited for more than 7 hours to step on the court in Steffi-Graf Stadium. That didn't stop Matteo Berrettini and Dominic Thiem from providing fans in the stands spectacular final of the bett1 Aces.
While the Austrian outplayed Jannik Sinner in the semifinals his final opponent Matteo Berrettini defeated Roberto Bautista Agut to book his final spot. It was the second meeting during the Coronavirus lockdown for Thiem and Berrettini as they previously met at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown that the Italian later won.
However, the match on the grass court in Berlin provided completely different conditions. In the first set, both players were really strong on their service as we didn't see any breakpoint. The set reached the tie-break and Berrettini showed great come back when he was losing already 1-4 but managed to win 7-4.
On the other hand, in the second set, we saw many more breakpoints. First, it was the Italian who had 2 opportunities to break his opponent in the 2nd game. However, he didn't convert any of those and so after Thiem converted the breakpoint in the 7th game, nothing stopped him from winning the set 6-4.
As almost every men's match at the bett1 Aces, also the final was decided in the super tie-break. Thiem got an early lead when he got two mini-breaks and led already 7-3. Despite the best efforts of his opponent, Berrettini didn't manage to come back and so Thiem won the match 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8 to become the men's champion of the bett1 Aces.
