Predictions BMW Open Munich 2026
Samuel Gill, Head Editor for TennisUpToDate.com sees Jakub Mensik winning it.
Alexander Zverev as good as he is on home soil is often prone to falling apart when the pressure is on and I see that again this week.
I see Jakub Mensik taking big advantage and that him, Ben Shelton and Alexander Bublik will be the forerunners here. All players with clay court titles or suit the surface of sorts.
I see them leading the way. Fritz like Zverev to go out early albeit more doubts about him in regards to recent injuries.
*** Jakub Mensik
** Ben Shelton, Alexander Bublik
Lucas Michael, Editor for TennisUpToDate.com sees Zverev as winner.
The BMW Open will again feature a stacked lineup of talent ready to tame the clay courts of Germany in the hope of taking home a coveted title.
The favourite has to be Alexander Zverev on home soil. He continues to get to big semi-finals in 2026 but failed to get past either of the big two. However, no Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner in Munich is a big boost for the world number three.
He still has a lot of players to get past. American duo Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton were runners-up in 2024 and 2025 respectively. I do not see them challenging for silverware this year, especially Fritz with the problems he has been going through this year.
I see an outsider challenging for the title. Someone like Luciano Darderi who is a menace to anyone he comes up against on clay. Fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli will also look to be in the mix at the business end with Alexander Bublik also a dangerous foe on court.
In my eyes, a fourth title and more cherished home success will go to the reigning champion.
*** Alexander Zverev
** Luciano Darderi, Alexander Bublik
* Flavio Cobolli, Ben Shelton, Jakub Mensik
Theo Stodiek, Editor for TennisAktuell.DE also sees Zverev crowned as champion.
Next week’s BMW Open in Munich feels like the perfect moment for Alexander Zverev to underline once again why this is very much his clay‑court backyard. The German arrives not only as defending champion after his straight‑sets win over Ben Shelton in the 2025 final, which gave him a record‑equalling third Munich crown, but also as one of the most in‑form players on tour following back‑to‑back semi‑final runs in Indian Wells and Miami, where only Jannik Sinner stopped him. With the home crowd behind him on his favourite surface and a noticeably more proactive court position this season, he is my clear pick for the title.
That said, this year’s edition has enough firepower to prevent it from feeling like a Zverev coronation. Rising Brazilian Joao Fonseca already proved in Buenos Aires 2025 that he can win titles on clay, claiming his first ATP trophy there and confirming that his heavy forehand and fearless attitude translate perfectly to the surface. Ben Shelton returns to Munich after prioritising an early clay swing in Houston, a decision that should pay off in terms of confidence and match rhythm on the dirt, even if hard courts remain his natural habitat. Taylor Fritz, a former finalist here, along with Alexander Bublik and Francisco Cerundolo, all have the weapons to take advantage if Zverev’s level dips at any point during the week. My prediction, however, is Zverev to defend his Munich crown in front of an electric home crowd, with Fonseca and Shelton as my leading candidates to disrupt the script.
