Dominic Thiem recently added yet another honour to his name by being named Austria's Sportsman of the Year.
It has been a spectacular year for Dominic Thiem and now because of it, he got named as Austria's Sportsman of the Year. It's a huge honour for any athlete to be named the best in his native country and for Thiem, it was no exception. His year includes several notable things with the US Open highest among them. It is his first grand slam title which came several months after he narrowly lost in the Australian Open final. He nearly lost in the US Open but he came back to win against Zverev in an epic match.
A solid run at Roland Garros was ended by an in-form Schwartzman but despite all of that he climbed to number 3 in the rankings and cemented himself as one of the best in the world. After receiving the award he said:
"I am overjoyed and would also like to congratulate the other top athletes. More than just one athlete deserves this award every year. I am happy to be in line with the really big ones now."
He defeated Bayern Munich footballer David Alaba for the award with the biggest winning margin in over 18 years. And it is well deserved as he is one of the best known Austrians in the world and certainly one of the better tennis players in the world at the moment.
