Already after Novak Djokovic defaulted from the 2020 US Open, it was sure that we'll see a new Grand Slam champion. There were a lot of names that could have won the title, but Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev got the closest.
Both were showing great performances throughout the tournament to reach the final. While Zverev defeated names like Anderson, Coric, or Carreno-Busta, his final opponent, Dominic Thiem lost only one set on his way to the final defeating Cilic, Auger-Aliassime, De Minaur, and Medvedev.
Although the Austrian led the H2H 7-2 and seemed to be in a better form ahead of the match, it all started perfectly for Zverev. The German used 2 out of 3 break points he had in the first set to win it 6-2 in just 31 minutes.
He kept the high-level of his tennis also in the second set and despite not converting three set points to win the set 6-1, he continued with the quality performance to win the set 6-4 and gain a 2-0 lead in the final match.
However, Dominic Thiem showed his experience with the Grand Slam final matches and never gave up the dream of winning the Grand Slam title. Although he was the first one to lose his service game also in the third set, he broke Zverev back and added one more break to win the third set 6-4.
In the fourth set, the story was similar to the first set, but this time it was Thiem who had all of the breakpoints in the set and didn't allow his opponent to have any. In fact, he lost only 2 points on his service game and won the set 6-3 to force the fifth deciding set.
The pressure was building and it was visible as we've seen 6 breaks of serve in the fifth set. Zverev broke his opponent in the 8th game and was leading 5-3 in the first set, serving for the championship. But that was still not enough to beat Dominic Thiem.
The Austrian broke him back and added one more break to serve for the championship in the 12th game; winning 6-5. But he also failed to win the game and so the tie-break decided about the 2020 US Open champion. Dominic Thiem prevailed in the tie-break and was crowned a 2020 US Open champion after winning 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6).
