Some would call it luck some would call it destiny but Thiem or Zverev will be crowned as the new US Open champion which will be a first for either.

After two weeks of stellar tennis, we have arrived at the end, the end after which either Alexander Zverev or Dominic Thiem will be crowned as the new US Open champion. While quite a few people predicted we would see one of them in the final not many would have guessed we would see both of them. A little bit of luck, a little bit of skill and the whole Djokovic fiasco gave us a Grand Slam final which is unpredictable, something rather lacking in tennis for many years.
Alexander Zverev reached the final after a ride that was quite bumpy. In the six matches that he played he lost a set in five of them. Despite that, the key to his success was his serve. When it worked it worked to perfection and it will need to work in the final if he hopes to win the US Open title. Another thing standing out for Zverev was his maturity, which lacked in the past. Even at times when he was on the ropes such as against Pablo Carreno-Busta, he found ways to fight back never stopping belief in himself.
Dominic Thiem on the other hand played a spectacular tournament so far. It reminded many of the types of Grand Slams Roger or Novak play. Better and better play as the tournament goes on with only limited energy consumption, just enough to win the match. In the six matches that he played he dropped only one set against Cilic who loves playing in New York. His last two wins over De Minaur and Medvedev were particularly impressive especially the one against the Russian where he showed elite composure in two crucial tiebreaks.
The familiarity between the two native German speakers is immense. They know each other for many years, they trained together, they spend time off the court together. When it comes to the court, they shared it 9 times in official matches. Thiem won 7 times including the last 3 matches. With all of those stats and the general form displayed it's clear that Thiem is the favourite but never discount the German, they usually perform best against impossible odds. Sascha's are not impossible, unlikely but not impossible.
The match starts at 22:00 CET and we will have a recap as soon as it ends so don't go far.
