Francisco Cerundolo had a unique way of meeting Novak Djokovic and he explained what had happened recently.
The Argentine was a guest on ESPN tennis and he explained how he met Novak Djokovic. It happened last year after Cerundolo played in the Buenos Aires final against Diego Schwartzman and lost. He travelled to Belgrade to play in the qualifiers because he was ranked outside of the top 100 and Djokovic came up to him and introduced himself.
He explained:
"I had just made the final here in Buenos Aires and went to Belgrade to play the qualies. Djokovic came to me, to say hello to me. I was ranked 110 or 120, and Djokovic came to me, introduced himself and congratulated me for my Buenos Aires final."
Cerundolo continued:
"[He congratulated me] for everything that I had won. He knew everything. At least [he] knows everything, I don’t know about the others. He even asked about my brother, and I said to myself, "Wow! This guy is No. 1 in the world, and yet he knows everything. He was asking me questions, talking to me like a friend. I was really surprised and it never changed since I was 600 in the world or No. 4 in the world."
Cerundolo came a long way since then being ranked number 24 in the world. Perhaps Djokovic saw a rising talent, who knows?
