Daniil Medvedev established himself as the clear No. 2 on the rankings in 2021 however the Russian wants to become No. 1.
Becoming world number one in tennis is not an easy thing to do regardless of the era of tennis. It's even harder in the Big 3 era especially when Novak Djokovic is having a historic 2021. But for Medvedev, it's a clear goal and one he is working on every day.
"Well, to be honest, to become the No. 1, with Djokovic it’s not easy because he’s winning almost all the matches and all the Grand Slams. So you need to beat him in the final. Maybe if I would have beaten him (in the Australian Open), I would be much closer. But he beat me, so that’s the reality."
Medvedev had the opportunity to face Djokovic in the Australian Open final. Many anticipated a close battle between them however Djokovic ran away with it fairly easily. Medvedev has had the most success in New York playing the final in 2019 and the semifinal last year. Asked about the upcoming swing he said:
“I just want to try to play my best tennis. You know, if you win two Grand Slams in a year and two Masters, you’re going to be No. 1. That’s what you need to try to aim for, and so of course I want to be No. 1, but, yeah, I need to win big tournaments and big titles for this. That’s what I’m trying to do."
