Tennis icon Martina Navratilova knows a thing or two about tennis and the former pro explained that the next-gen are simply not as good as the BIG 3.
The era of the big 3 has been one of the best eras in tennis with
Novak Djokovic,
Roger Federer and
Rafael Nadal all peaking in consecutive years. Each of them has a respectable case to be considered the greatest player of all time which make the past decade and more a fun time to watch tennis.
Many wondered when it will end and with the emergence of several very good tennis players collectively named as the next-gen it seemed like it was coming. However, it's did not happen yet and Navratilova believes there is a good reason for that. She said:
“If you had all these players try to hit a target on a practice court where there’s no pressure, Rafa would just hit the target more than them. These guys have to play slightly above their level just to get to finals, and so their average day is not as good.”
She further said:
“If you’ve been in the Top 10 without improving for four or five years then maybe you have found your level. Otherwise, it’s not too late for them to keep improving. And as their games grow, their confidence will grow and then they may be the ones with the mental edge."
