Novak Djokovic remains composed when discussing the potential impact Carlos Alcaraz could have on his career. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is gearing up for his Australian Open debut after a high-profile practice set with the Spanish young star, which Djokovic won 7-5 just a day before their respective first-round matches.

Despite being fierce rivals on the court, Djokovic has often displayed a positive relationship with Alcaraz off it. The Serbian leads their head-to-head 4-3, with both suffering tough losses along the way. Alcaraz claimed victory in the last two Wimbledon finals, while Djokovic won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by defeating Carlitos in the final.

Djokovic urges Alcaraz to "focus on longevity"

At 21, Alcaraz has already secured four major titles and needs only the Australian Open to complete a Career Slam—winning all four of tennis' most prestigious tournaments. If he secures the title this season or within the next two editions, Alcaraz will become the youngest player to achieve this feat.

Alcaraz has openly expressed his ambition to make tennis history and challenge the records held by the Big-3, where Djokovic dominates most statistical categories. The young star sets high goals, though Djokovic believes a bit of moderation is necessary for now. "He’s even said himself, he wants to make history. He wants to be 'the best in history.' I respect that kind of mentality of 'Hey, I think I got the goods.' But maybe it’s a little bit early for him to think about history."

“It’s too early. But, you know, people say my records will never be broken. I doubt that. I mean, Carlos could already be the next guy,” Djokovic commented. “Even Jannik (Sinner). If they take care of their bodies, do things properly, and focus on longevity, they can achieve it."

“Carlos has done something no one in history has accomplished at such a young age. The odds are with him. He’s going to complete his [Career] Slam very soon,” Djokovic added.

Djokovic will debut against Nishesh Basavareddy on Monday night at Rod Laver Arena, while Alcaraz faces Kazakh player Alexander Shevchenko on Margaret Court Arena. The two could potentially meet in quarterfinals if both advance through the draw.
