Top seed at the cinch Championships
Matteo Berrettini won his opener at the Queen's Club event over compatriot Travaglia.
Matteo Berrettini overcame a sluggish start to the match against Travaglia to win in two tiebreaks 7-6(5) 7-6(4). The Italian has the perfect game for grass courts with his powerful serve and strong forehand. Even so, things did not look good initially as Travaglia was able to take a 3-0 lead early. However, Berrettini was patient enough to wait for his chance and once he got it he did not let it slip away.
He used his lone break point in the set to tie it up at 4-4 before taking a 5-4 lead. Travaglia was not shaken and served well enough to force a tiebreak where Berrettini was able to emerge victorious 7-5. A lapse in focus from Berrettini was the story of the early 2nd set as well.
Once again, he lost his serve in the first serving game he had to give Travaglia a 2-0 lead. After that, neither player was able to carve out any significant chances except for Berrettini who got his first match point late in the set at 6-5. After saving it and sending things to another tiebreak Travaglia once again faltered in extra play.
Berrettini was able to emerge victorious in the 2nd one with 7-4 and move on to the next round. A solid start for the Italian who has not played on the grass a very long time but he was able to squeeze out a win against a solid Travaglia today.
