Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka faced off in Montreal for a place in the semifinal of the National Bank Open.
It was a very good match between two very good Belarussian players where Aryna Sabalenka proved the better player winning 6-2 6-4. Sabalenka who is the number one seed at this event is playing just like that. She was dominant so far and she was dominant in the first set vs Azarenka.
Vika struggled to handle the brutal way of playing tennis that Sabalenka employs facing numerous vicious forehands early in rallies. That oftentimes forced her on the back foot where she does not play her best tennis. Sabalenka created 9 break point opportunities converting 3.
Azarenka pulled one back but it was not enough as Sabalenka ran away with 6-2. The 2nd set was a very interesting one where Vika struggled with her serve but even so she handled the pressure put on by Sabalenka much better in rallies. She was also able to create a lot of pressure when returning, especially on the 2nd serve.
That gave her 3 break opportunities and she was able to convert two. However, she also allowed two break points on her own serve and Sabalenka used both. The 2nd set was a costly one as it actually was a match point which ended the match with the 2nd set score of 6-4.
