Reilly Opelka is through to the National Bank Open semifinal with a strong win over Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3 7-6(1).
Roberto Bautista Agut has been struggling this season playing very inconsistent tennis throughout the year. The Spaniard has played some brilliant events and also some terrible ones. Here it was a mix of both and today he simply did not have it. Opelka on hard courts is always a tough opponent and when the American plays well he is virtually unplayable.
Bautista Agut has the variety in his game to challenge Opelka however today the American was able to respond well. He took an early break never looked back winning the first set with 6-3. He did not allow a single break point on his serve, losing only two first-serve points.
The 2nd set was a rather straightforward one as both players mainly focused on their own serve. Bautista Agut was focused and determined not to get broken again and he succeeded. He lost only 4 points until the tiebreak on his serve while Opelka lost 7.
However, when it mattered the most the American was able to play better than Bautista Agut winning the tiebreak fairly easily with 7-1. He moves on to the semifinal which is a great result for Opelka who has had a lacklustre season so far. Opelka joked after the match writing on the camera Servebot which you can see below.
