Stefanos Tsitsipas is the first player to advance to the National Bank Open Toronto semifinal by defeating Casper Ruud 6-1 6-4.
Another day and another great performance by Stefanos Tsitsipas in Toronto. His matchup against Ruud drew a lot of interest considering the previous time they played Ruud was better. This time around it's on hard it Tsitsipas showed he is the much better player on hard courts.
The Greek player came out furious from the start catching Ruud off guard with his aggressive attacking. Ruud could not rely on his first serve as he did not hit it consistently. On his 2nd serve, he was too prone to attacks by Tsitispas which resulted in a quick 6-1 set for Stefanos.
The 2nd set was much better from Ruud and the Norwegian even had an early break point which he failed to convert. In the next game, Tsitsipas failed to convert his break point and the match continued without too much excitement. Ruud's serve was working much better which allowed him to keep Tsitispas at a distance.
The crucial moment came late in the set at 4-4 when Tsitsipas in a timely manner played some stellar rallies to carve out a break points. He then converted it to take a 5-4 lead before calmly serving out the match with 6-4. It was a very good effort from Tsitsipas who was simply more comfortable with the court and conditions.
He moves on to the semifinal where he will face either Bautista Agut or Opelka. The match starts shortly and you can expect an update once it finishes.
