Stefanos Tsitsipas missed day one of the
ATP Cup as his elbow injury flared up once more forcing the Greek to abandon plans of playing against Hurkacz.
Stefanos Tsitsipas underwent elbow surgery in November of last year for an injury that has bothered him for close to two years. Tsitsipas was playing with elbow pain for a long time and finally decided to undergo surgery to fix that. His recovery was smooth but it hit a roadblock in Sydney as he was forced to abandon his plans to play against Hurkacz on day one of the ATP Cup.
He released a statement saying:
“The
recovery from my elbow surgery in November is on track for Melbourne
and today was a precautionary step to make sure I make Melbourne. We will see day by day, match by match until then.”
In a bizarre twist of events, Tsitsipas then elected to play the doubles match instead despite Greece already losing the tie 2-0. It will be interesting to see what he says after the match.
