It was a fairly late finish for Tstisipas who sailed past
Jeremy Chardy into R2 of Roland-Garros 7-6(6) 6-3 6-0.
The Greek superstar faced an always tricky player in Jeremy Chardy who despite not enjoying clay, can put forward a great effort especially on home soil. Such was the case in this match where Chardy played some great tennis early. Tsitsipas took an early break 3-1 but Chardy pulled it right back to make it 3-3. Chardy continued playing well and even carved out a set point at 5-4 but Tsitsipas proved calm.
In the tiebreak, the Greek simply played better dictating points with his stellar forehand getting the win with 8-6. Everything went easier from there for Tsitsipas who continued playing good tennis against Chardy who focused most on getting his first serve in.
If he failed to do the point would be practically over as Stefanos attacked every weaker serve. Chardy won games harder in the 2nd set and Tstisipas ultimately broke him to take the 5-3 lead which led to a 6-3 2nd set finish. He started off the 3rd set with an early break as Chardy's play eroded further.
He never looked back adding another break later to take a 4-0 lead. He then added another break to finish it off with 6-1. A great start for Tsitispas who is enjoying a stellar clay season.
