Wimbledon
has concluded, and the ATP Tour continues with the final grass-court event at
the Newport
Hall of Fame Open, along with three clay tournaments leading up to
the Olympic Games. These include the ATP 500
Hamburg European Open and the ATP 250 Swiss
Open Gstaad and
Bastad Open, taking place during the week of July 15-22.
The clay
tournaments provide a valuable opportunity for players heading to Paris 2024 to
adjust to the surface change before returning to Roland Garros. Notable players
in action include
Rafael Nadal,
Alexander Zverev,
Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper
Ruud, and
Holger Rune.
Zverev defends
title in Hamburg; star-studded lineup in Gstaad
The ATP 500
Hamburg Open is the week's most prestigious tournament regarding prize money
and points. World No. 4 Alexander Zverev is the title favorite as the only
top-10 player in the draw and the defending champion. The local hero will face
tough competition from Holger Rune and Argentine players
Sebastian Baez and
Francisco Cerundolo.
Other
notable names include
Arthur Fils, who reached the Round of 16 at Wimbledon,
China's Zhang Zhizhen, and Italians
Luciano Darderi,
Matteo Arnaldi, and Flavio
Cobolli.
Simultaneously,
the Swiss Open will take place in Gstaad, albeit without defending champion
Pedro Cachin. However, the tournament will feature several renowned players,
including Stefanos Tsitsipas,
Ugo Humbert,
Felix Auger-Aliassime, Matteo
Berrettini, and
Jan-Lennard Struff.
Nadal returns
to Bastad; Mannarino leads last grass tournament Draw
Perhaps the
most anticipated comeback of the week is Rafael Nadal at the Bastad Open. The
Spaniard, who won the title there in 2005, skipped the grass swing and has been
training on clay to be in peak form for Paris 2024. Nadal last played at the
French Open, where he exited in the first round against Zverev.
Rafael Nadal at 2024 Madrid Open.
At Bastad,
Nadal will compete alongside
Andrey Rublev,
Casper Ruud, Cameron Norrie, and
Mariano Navone, among others. Additionally, Nadal is expected to partner with
Casper Ruud in the tournament's doubles, as he prepares to play doubles with
Carlos Alcaraz at the Olympics and aims to gain rhythm in that format.
The week
following Wimbledon also features the last grass-court tournament and the only
one in the U.S. The draw is led by grass-court specialist
Adrian Mannarino and
includes a legion of American players such as
Marcos Giron,
Brandon Nakashima,
Alex Michelsen, and
Christopher Eubanks.
