Boris Becker experienced the
Laver Cup up close for the first time and asserted that we are in a 'tennis boom internationally' despite the generational shift the sport is undergoing. Roger Federer has been retired for two years, and both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic seem increasingly close to leaving tennis.
Nole is the only one who has maintained the highest level, although he just completed a year without Grand Slam titles, the first since 2017. At 37 years old and after winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games, the end of the Big-3 era appears to be drawing nearer.
However, new names are emerging to lead tennis in the coming years. This year, Jannik Sinner (23 years) and Carlos Alcaraz (21 years) each claimed two Grand Slam titles, marking the first year without Big-3 titles since 2002.
Becker, a six-time Grand Slam champion and member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, was one of the honored guests at the recent Laver Cup held in Berlin, Germany. The former World No. 1 closely watched the matches featuring Alcaraz, Zverev, and others alongside Roger Federer: “I'm a big fan of team competitions; I liked playing in the Davis Cup. I've always watched the Laver Cup; this is my first time here in person,” said Becker. “And I feel very proud to have been invited to the German capital.”
“First of all, it is extremely important for Germany as a tennis location to have the Laver Cup in Berlin. It is equally important that we have the best German tennis player, Sascha Zverev, in our ranks here,” he commented regarding the current World No. 2.
“We are currently experiencing a tennis boom internationally and in Germany, too; many people are watching more tennis than before. So it's important to have tournaments like the Laver Cup, where the best in the world play,” Becker added.
Becker also named those he currently considers the best players in the world: “Three is not enough. But I would choose the three best: in this case, that would be Alcaraz, Sinner, and Zverev. Two of them are in Berlin.”
