Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has stated that he remains unsure of participating in the first Grand Slam of 2025. The Australian Open’s next edition will begin on January 12 where players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
One player who is bound to centre of attention will be local boy Kyrgios who is expected to play in his first Grand Slam after two years. The 29-year-old remained out of action for more than two years because of a wrist injury. Kyrgios returned to the court in the ongoing Brisbane International, where he featured in both singles and doubles events.
In the singles event, the former world number 13’s journey came to an end in the opening round after losing to France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a hard-fought contest in three sets with a score of 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Kyrgios spoke to the media after the match, as quoted by BBS Sports, where he stated that the match was a great one for him after staying out of action for so long. The Canberra-born star stated that he is ‘super excited’ to participate in the Australian Open but also hinted that he is unsure whether he will be fit enough to feature in the competition.
"After today I'm super excited for the Australian Open,” he said. “If I'm able to play, I'm able to play. But the reality kind of set in for me. That's a best-of-three match with my wrist. If I'm able to [play], not only is a Grand Slam mentally really draining, it's physically a grind. I think I almost need a miracle, and I need, like, the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a Grand Slam for sure. For me, honestly, it was a great match, considering I hadn't played in 18 months. And to put myself in a winning position was exciting. It was just good to be back out there and to say that I can still play a level against someone like that who is coming off the best year of their career and only getting better."
