Italy’s tennis star Jannik Sinner is one step away from joining an elite list of players who won the Australian and US Open in the same season. The 23-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.

Sinner is currently taking part in the US Open, where he booked his place in the final for the first time after beating Britain’s Jack Dripper in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 7-6, 6-2. With that result, the Italian tennis star is just one positive result away from joining an elite list of players who won the Australian and the US Open in the same calendar year.

The only two players who had done that before were Switzerland’s legendary tennis stars, Roger Federer and Djokovic. Federer, who is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, won both the Australian Open and the US Open in the same year on three occasions — in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Djokovic, who is regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, also achieved the same on three occasions in 2011, 2015 and 2023. Sinner won the Australian Open earlier this year after beating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 3–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3.

Sinner is now set to face America’s Taylor Fritz in the final of the competition on Sunday. The 26-year-old, who became the first American player to cement a spot in the final of the US Open in the last 18 years, defeated fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe in the semifinal in a five-set thriller with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
