Botic Van de Zandschulp is enjoying his best career week in New York as the Dutch player is through to the quarterfinals.
He pulled off an upset over 11th seed and two-time
US Open quarterfinalist
Diego Schwartzman 6-4 6-4 5-7 5-7 6-1. A truly sensational match from both players lasting over four hours and delivering some high drama. It started off calm as the Dutch player had full control of the match early.
He took an early break and maintained it to win the opening set with 6-4. He played fairly aggressively and it worked for him despite quite a few cheap errors. The 2nd set continued similarly with the Dutch player once more emerging victorious with 6-4. This time around he was even better playing aggressively as Diego struggled.
The 3rd set for the most part continued a similar way. Once again Van de Zandschulp was in control taking a 4-2 lead and seemingly marching towards an easy upset. However, a very late rally by Schwartzman ensured a comeback chance for him as he won the set with 7-5.
Belief in a comeback increased after the 4th set when Schwartzman pulled out the set against seemingly impossible odds. Firstly he was up a break with 4-3 only to lose it straight away. He then allowed himself to be down 15-40 at 4-5 giving Botic two match points.
He saved both with bad errors by Botic and proceeded to win the set 7-5 after a collapse by the Dutch player. It came down to the decider and it was Botic who dominated. Once again going all out he was playing extra aggressively and Schwartzman had no answer. Game after game passed and Van De Zandschulp close it out with 6-1.
