Andrey
Rublev yelled furiously at a photographer for walking during a crucial point in
the Masters 1000 Shanghai Open final.
A thrilling
final unfolded between
Andrey Rublev (7th) and
Hubert Hurkacz (17th) in
Shanghai. The match lasted two hours and seven minutes and was decided in the
third-set tiebreak after both players had held match points. Hurkacz emerged as
the champion, capitalizing on his fifth match point, and the final score was
6-3, 3-6, 7-6(8).
During the
third set, Rublev displayed questionable behavior as he shouted angrily at a
cameraman. The score was momentarily 5-4 in favor of Hurkacz, and Rublev was
serving with the game at deuce when a cameraman appeared to walk during the
rally between the players.
After
losing the point, Rublev was visibly upset, and the umpire issued him a warning
for verbal abuse. Despite having a match point against him, the 25-year-old
Russian managed to hold his serve and extend the match.
Second Masters 1000 for Hurkacz
Hubert
Hurkacz survived a tough battle against Rublev and took the lead in their
head-to-head rivalry, now standing at 3-2. Hurkacz secured his second Masters
1000 title following his victory at the 2021 Miami Open.
His journey
through Shanghai included victories over Thanasi Kokkinakis, Yu Hsiou Hsu,
Zhang Zhizhen, Fabian Marozsan, Sebastian Korda, and ultimately Rublev. During
the tournament, the Polish player won all four tiebreaks he played, including
two in the deciding set against the Russian and Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen.
This was
Hurkacz's first official tournament since the US Open, although he did
participate in the Laver Cup recently. With this win, he notched his seventh
career title and will rise six places to World No. 11, on the cusp of returning
to the prestigious top-10 group.
Hubert
Hurkacz's next challenge will be at the ATP 500 Tokyo Open, which starts on
October 16th, while Andrey Rublev will take a week off and travel to Europe for
the ATP 500 Vienna Open.
