French young tennis star Arthur
Fils showcased another side of his personality during the European Open clash.
The 19-year-old defeated Estonia’s
Mark Lajal in the second round of the competition in straight sets with a score
of 6-3, 6-4.
During that match, Fils accidentally
hit a young fan with his serve. However, he responded superbly and instantly
gave her his wristband.
Fils is now set to face off Peru’s
Juan Pablo Varillas in the quarterfinal of the event on Thursday. It will be
the first time the two will clash on the tennis court.
The Bondoufle-born will be hoping
to get another positive result and continue his journey towards winning an ATP
event.
Fils is one of the most highly-rated
young men’s singles tennis players current playing in the circuit.
However, he could not live up to
the hype in the major events in 2023 where despite playing in the main round of
the three Grand Slams, he did not qualify for the third round or beyond in any
of the events.
Fils’ most notable performance
came in the US Open where he was knocked out after losing the second-round tie
to Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in a five-set thriller with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6,
5-7, 6-4.
