A cameraman suffered an unfortunate fall just before the start
of the title defence of Italy’s
Jannik Sinner in the
Australian Open. The first
Grand Slam of the year started on Sunday, and players from all over the world participated to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
This year, in the men’s singles category, Italy’s Sinner
will be defending his title as he lifted his first Grand Slam in Melbourne last
year after beating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in a five-set thriller
with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. The 23-year-old started his title’s
defence on Monday against Chile’s Nicholas Jarry.
The contest had an interesting moment when a cameraman fell just
before the start of the contest while covering Jerry’s entrance. The
broadcasters had to immediately cut the shot to ensure no further embarrassment
for anyone. It was the reigning world number one who came out on top in the
match in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6, 6-1. Talking after the match, Sinner stated that he was ‘happy’ to be back at the Rod Laver Arena and also talked about his second-round opponent, Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate, who, according to him, is a player with ‘huge potential’.
"I’m very happy to be back,” he said. “Thank you so
much for coming. The atmosphere was amazing. I think today was a very close
one. He’s [Schoolkate] an incredible player. Huge potential. I’m happy with how
I handled a tough situation in the first couple of sets. Happy to be in the
next round. You need also a bit of luck," he said. "I have to say I
was lucky to have the right people at the right time. You have to enjoy the
tough moments. They will always come up. Just try to put a smile on your face. I
work hard. Family and the close people in your life always come first. That’s
my advice to you. I wish every young kid the best of luck."
